From Salvaged Trees
to Timeless Pieces

At Wood Ingenuity, our custom woodworking story is deeply rooted in a passion for design, craftsmanship, and the natural beauty of wood. What began with a salvaged tree and a vision has grown into a full-service woodworking shop that serves homeowners, designers, builders, and architects across the region.

How It All Started

Wood Ingenuity began in 2014 after a massive White Oak fell during a storm on Jim Boyle’s farm in Queen Anne’s County. What started as a father-son effort to salvage the tree led Jim and his son David—an experienced carpenter with a passion for fine wood—on a search for the right equipment. That search resulted in the purchase of a 67″ Wood-Mizer WM1000 sawmill and the launch of Wood Ingenuity.

Soon after, a second saw was added for smaller cuts, and David’s brother, Mark Boyle, joined the business, bringing a wealth of business experience to help scale and shape the growing company.

What started with one salvaged tree has grown into a full-service custom woodworking operation—capable of milling, kiln drying, and crafting pieces that bring out the best in each unique cut of wood.

Our Process

We don’t just build furniture and custom trim pieces—we start with the raw material. Our process often begins with a fallen or unwanted tree. From there, we handle every step:

  • Sourcing & Upcycling: Whether it’s salvaged from a storm or removed for construction, we give local trees a second life.
  • Milling & Drying: We mill each log ourselves and allow it to air-dry as long as possible to preserve its color and character. Once it’s ready, we transfer it to our kilns for final drying—ensuring the wood is stable and ready for its next chapter.
  • Crafting: Every piece is designed and built in our woodshop, where attention to detail and precision craftsmanship guide every cut, joint, and finish.
  • Finishing Touches: We use high-quality oils, finishes, and hardware to ensure longevity, function, and beauty.

What Makes Us Different

Not every project uses our in-house woodworking—but when a client wants something unique, or a design needs that final touch, we offer direct access to some of the finest wood in the region and the skilled hands to shape it.

We also have a team of in-house designers who specialize in kitchen, bath, and interior spaces. Their design expertise allows us to seamlessly integrate custom wood elements into a larger vision—bringing balance, proportion, and purpose to every project. Whether you need a statement piece or a subtle detail, our designers can help guide and refine the concept to match your space and style.

We collaborate directly with homeowners, architects, and builders to deliver fully customized solutions—from live-edge dining tables and vanities to floating shelves, custom trim, flooring and more. If it’s made of wood, we can do it.

Where We Are Now

Today, Wood Ingenuity operates a full design studio and woodworking shop under one roof. We’re still family-owned and hands-on in everything we do. While the tools have evolved and the projects have grown, our mission remains the same: to create thoughtful, lasting pieces and spaces that honor the natural character of the wood and the vision of each client.
