About Us

ws-aboutWood Ingenuity is a full service sawmill that specializes in live edge slabs. Located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we cut large reclaimed trees up to 67″ in diameter. We turn fallen, damaged or dead trees that would otherwise go to landfills or become mulch, into valuable lumber to be used in our shop and the shops of other woodworkers.

Our stock includes locally grown species such as Black Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Pine and Poplar. We serve urban or rural residential, business, woodland and forest property owners from Salisbury to Annapolis, including Queen Anne, Kent, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester and Anne Arundel Counties. Recycled lumber can be used for a large number of projects including: tables, shelves, cabinets, flooring, and mantels, just to name a few.

OUR STORY

In 2013, a large White Oak went down during a storm on the farm of Jim Boyle, a farmer in Queen Anne’s County for over 50 years. Jim’s belief in not wasting, led him to look for someone to cut the tree to use for the sides of a barn. There were not any sawmills in the area with a saw big enough to cut the tree from its original state. He cut the tree in half and took it to a local sawyer where it broke the saw. Jim proceeded to cut it again, so that the tree was in quarters. The time and expense spent on trying to prevent a good tree from going to waste didn’t make sense.

Jim suggested to his youngest son David, a skilled carpenter, that they should investigate available saw options outside of their region. David, who has worked in home construction for over 15 years, has always had a strong appreciation for fine pieces of wood. Their search led them to finding the 67″ diameter Wood-Mizer Saw, WM-1000.

In 2014, Wood Ingenuity was launched by the father and son team.

After a few months, they realized a smaller saw was needed to make it a one-stop sawmill. They purchased a 28″ diameter Wood-Mizer Saw, LT40 Super HD. David has taken the lead at the sawmill and enjoys working with a variety of woods. In 2016, he asked his sister, Jane Brice, to join Wood Ingenuity to help with the administrative side of the business. Jane has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and has worked in the finance industry for over 18 years.
